Archideco is pleased to introduce Claraval, a ceramics studio from Alcobaça, Portugal, pioneering a world-first technology that transforms sound into physical form.
The concept challenges everything we understand about ceramic design. Rather than beginning with sketches or traditional wheel-throwing, Claraval's process starts with audio recordings—human voices, musical performances, natural soundscapes—which are processed through proprietary computational algorithms to generate three-dimensional geometries. These sound-derived forms are then realized in clay by skilled artisans using time-honored Portuguese ceramic techniques: slip-casting, hand-finishing, and the development of innovative glazes.
The result is ceramics that carry both visual beauty and emotional resonance—objects that embody the acoustic memory of a specific moment, voice, or place.
The Monastery Collection: When Silence Became Form
The founding collection began unexpectedly during a brief meeting with Sónia Tavares, the celebrated vocalist from Portuguese band The Gift. What was planned as a simple introduction turned into an impromptu performance inside a monastery—a place of habitual silence suddenly filled with the startling power of Tavares' voice reverberating through sacred stone walls.

That recording became the acoustic foundation for the Monastery Collection. The sound waves were translated into fluid, sculptural forms that capture the intensity and movement of that singular moment. As the Claraval team describes it: "We were in awe, and this was the starting point."
The Mia Collection: Contrasts in Voice and Form
Singer Mia Benita presented a different kind of inspiration. Observing her perform in Lisbon, the Claraval designers witnessed a remarkable transformation: timid and hesitant before taking the stage, then suddenly focused, confident, and emotionally intense during her performance of a song about lost love. This duality—shy vulnerability meeting artistic resolve—informed the geometric language of the Mia Collection, where hesitant curves meet bold, decisive lines.

The Foz Collection: Where River Meets Sea
At Foz do Douro, where Portugal's Douro River empties into the Atlantic, Claraval recorded the complex soundscape of turbulent waters merging, waves breaking against stone jetties, distant city traffic, and passing boats. This "highly textured soundscape full of detail" was translated into ceramics that reflect the layered, dynamic character of that specific geographical moment.

Claraval operates from the heart of Alcobaça, a region with centuries of ceramic heritage. The fusion of cutting-edge computational design with traditional Portuguese craftsmanship represents both technological innovation and cultural preservation—honoring the past while creating something entirely unprecedented.
Each piece is designed and handcrafted in Portugal, carrying forward a legacy of ceramic excellence into an entirely new dimension.
Claraval ceramics are now available in the Baltics exclusively through Archideco, Riga.
